What most affects me is what could this possibly be doing to our children. To understand quite directly that I can’t buy blueberries because they’re way too expensive even though they’re very healthy but I can buy three boxes of pasta, you wonder how this steers food choices.” - Councilmember Mary Cheh on the #SNAPChallenge

As part of what has now become an annual, humbling tradition, Councilmember Mary Cheh stopped by Engine 29 in the Palisades today, among other fire houses, to recognize and thank the personnel for their leadership and service in rememberence of the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Engine 29 was one that was called to the Pentagon to help with evacuation efforts on that day.

Councilmember Cheh speaks with Councilmember Mendelson (L) and Mayor Vincent Gray (R) before a press conference on the U.S. Immigration Enforcement and Customs agency’s decision to implement the “secure” communities program, which would require local police departments to share arrest information, including fingerprint data, with federal immigration authorities. The federal government has been rolling out the program on a state-by-state basis and officials are expected to activate in for DC tomorrow. This past fall, Mayor Gray signed an executive order to stop the program.
