Councilmember Cheh joins D.C. Water team to unveil the new 400-foot-long, 1,300 ton tunnel boring machine named ‘Lady Bird.’ The machine will dig four miles worth of tunnel some 100 feet below the bottom of the Potomac River that will allow for the storage of runoff from the city’s aging combined sewers during heavy storms

Councilmember Cheh presents the “SisterMentors Recognition Resolution of 2013” to Dr. Shireen Lewis, the executive director of EduSeed, which administers the SisterMentors program. Founded in 1997, SisterMentors’ mission is to promote education among traditionally disadvantaged and underserved communities such as women and people of color. SisterMentors mentors young women of color as they matriculate through college and graduate school. SisterMentors has helped 19 women through college and 42 women of color to earn doctorates.

Councilmember Cheh shops at Giant on Connecticut Avenue in Ward 3 as she attempts the 2012 SNAP Challenge, organized by D.C. Hunger Solutions. The challenge is to live on $30 for a week’s worth of groceries - about the average supplement an individual SNAP recipient in the District gets. This amount does not cover basic personal needs, like soap, shampoo, washing detergent, toothpaste, etc. The challenge lasts until Monday, October 15th at midnight.

As part of what has now become an annual, humbling tradition, Councilmember Mary Cheh stopped by Engine 29 in the Palisades today, among other fire houses, to recognize and thank the personnel for their leadership and service in rememberence of the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Engine 29 was one that was called to the Pentagon to help with evacuation efforts on that day.
